Jane Hauger

Obituary of Jane Susan Hauger

Jane Susan (Earnest) Hauger, 77, of Terra Alta passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at home.

She was born April 28, 1947, in Glen Dale, W.Va., to the late John Henry and Marguerite Cecilia (Craig) Earnest.

Jane was a 1965 graduate of Bishop Donahue High School and a 1969 graduate of Wheeling College with a bachelor's degree in English literature. She later received a master's degree in early childhood education from West Virginia University.

Jane made her career as a kindergarten teacher at Terra Alta Elementary School and was remembered by many students for her annual tradition of incubating eggs and hatching chicks in her classroom. Her love of nature, animals and history was evident throughout her life — from a decades-long association with Oglebay Institute's Mountain Nature Camp to the numerous dogs, birds and fish to which she gave a loving home. She appreciated the craftsmanship of antique quilts and worked in her garden for as long as she was able.

Jane is survived by two sons, Joseph Franklin Hauger, Jr. and Robert Allen Hauger, both of Terra Alta; a grandson, Quinn; two brothers, John Earnest of Benwood, W.Va., and Craig Earnest of LaVale, Md.; a sister, Mary Ellen of Houston, Texas; several nieces and nephews; and her longtime friend and kindergarten co-worker, Patty Rodeheaver.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Joseph Franklin Hauger Sr., in 2022.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Cranberry Medical Clinic, Garrett Regional Medical Center and its cancer center, and WV Caring for the care Jane received over the past several years and into her final weeks.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Edward Catholic Church in Terra Alta on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 11:00 am with Father Dominic Atishu as celebrant. An hour of viewing will be held prior to the service at St. Edward Catholic Church. Private interment will take place in the Terra Alta Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated. Donations in Jane's memory can be made to the Terra Alta Public Library, 701B E State Avenue, Terra Alta, WV 26764, or your local animal shelter.
