Obituary of Lionel Adair Friend

Lionel Adair "Lad" Friend, 93, of Terra Alta, WV, passed away Saturday, December 23, 2023, at home surrounded by his family.

He was born July 7, 1930, in Terra Alta. He is a son of the late Warden Scott and Mary Grace (Hoban) Friend.

Lad proudly served his country in the United States Army in the 201st Artillery. He was a member of the Living Hope Church in Terra Alta. Most importantly, Lad was a family man and absolutely loved spending time with them.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Josephine "Jo" (Davis) Friend; two daughters, Debbie Feather and husband, Kelvin of Terra Alta, and Becki Christenopher of Oakland, MD; three grandchildren, Travis Wharton and wife, Tricia of Hazelton, WV, Adam Wharton and wife, Mandy of Terra Alta, and Tiffany Giffen and husband, Eric of Terra Alta; four great-grandchildren, Rachel "Punky" Giffen, Caleb Wharton, Anna Wharton, and Isaac Wharton; two sisters, Nancy Morrow and husband, William of Kentucky, and Joyce Schrock and husband, Robert of Clarksburg, WV; one brother, Thomas Friend and wife, Linda of Terra Alta.

In addition to his parents, Lad is preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Hebb of Terra Alta; three brothers, Rev. Warren Friend of Terra Alta, Joseph Friend of Terra Alta, and James Michael Friend of Virginia.

Friends may call at the Living Hope Church, 2403 Russ DeBerry Road, Terra Alta, WV 26764, on Thursday, December 28, 2023, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and on Friday, December 29, 2023, from 11:00am until the 1:00pm time of service with Pastor Adam Wharton officiating. Interment will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Terra Alta.
