Janet Elaine Stickler Obituary
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Janet Elaine Stickler, passed away at home in Alpine Lake, Terra Alta, West Virginia on Monday March 9th, 2026.
The youngest of four children, Elaine was born on November 24, 1936, in Tunnelton, West Virginia to Leonard Patrick Mankins and Susan Bickford Mankins.
Elaine graduated from Tunnelton High School in May of 1954, earned an associate's degree from Potomac State College in 1956, and a bachelor's degree in English from Fairmont State in 1958. She then taught English in Bruceton Mills, WV, for a year before marrying Mitchell Gene Stickler in Tunnelton on August 6, 1960, at St Michael's Catholic church. Elaine and Mitch raised five sons in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, before returning to West Virginia for retirement.
Elaine was a faithful and active member of St Edward's Catholic Church in Terra Alta, and an active member of the Terra Alta Civic Club.
Elaine enjoyed sending thoughtful and humorous cards to loved ones and friends (often including cartoon clippings!) and was well known for remembering so many birthdays and anniversaries.
She loved her home state of WV, the Buckwheat festival and buckwheat cakes. Elaine was an avid sports fan, pulling for the Eagles and the Mountaineers every year.
Elaine is survived by sons, Mitchell C. Stickler of DE, Matthew G. Stickler of OR, Mark G. Stickler of PA, Patrick B. Stickler of WA, and Jason D. Stickler of WV; six grandchildren, Michelle, Claire, Andrew, Vera, Dillon, Daniel, and Ada-lynn Elaine, and her sister Iris Jennings.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Mitchell Stickler, brother, Patrick Eugene Mankins, and sister, Margaret Francis McMillen.
Liturgy outside of Mass will be held at the St. Joseph Cemetery Chapel, 713-971 St. Joseph Church Road, Tunnelton, WV 26444, 11:00 am, Friday March 13, 2026, with Father Dominic Athishu as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery.
