Obituary of Dorinda Yevette Mattingly
Dorinda Short Mattingly, 63, of Terra Alta, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025. A gentle spirit and deeply compassionate woman, Dorinda lived her life as a vessel of grace, kindness, and quiet strength. Those who knew her experienced the rare gift of being truly seen and heard — for she was a marvelous, genuine listener who offered her presence as healing.
Dorinda served her community with compassion and purpose as a Behavioral Health Technician at the rehabilitation facility in Terra Alta, where she walked alongside those working to rebuild their lives. Her work was more than a profession — it was a ministry of presence and love. Through her calm and steady spirit, she offered hope and dignity to the hurting and vulnerable.
Dorinda was deeply spiritual, one who embraced and reflected the fruits of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. She lived these out daily, not through proclamation, but through embodiment. In her quiet strength and humble service, she showed the world the nature of divine love.
Her kitchen was always open, her table always full — of snacks, of stories, and of laughter. Whether it was a spontaneous drop-in or a long-planned visit, Dorinda's hospitality wrapped around you like a warm blanket. She had a gift for creating space where everyone felt welcome, heard, and nourished — both in body and in soul.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Larry G. Mattingly; her parents, Ernest E. Short and Dorothy M. (Dorotha) Short; and her brother, Ernest E. Short II.
Dorinda is survived by her son, Varian J. Mattingly (wife Lauren) of Pittsburgh, PA, and her treasured grandchildren, Argus and Avonelle. She was also a beloved stepmother to Gene Mattingly (wife Missy) of Winchester, VA, and Shawn Myer of Morgantown, WV. She was a proud grandmother to Gene's children: Caleb (wife Sophia), Gabby, and Eli — and great-grandmother to James — as well as to Shawn's daughters, Lauryn and Cathryn.
She leaves behind her dear sisters, Lillian Mason (husband Orville) of Kingwood, WV, and Glenna Foster (husband Benjamin); and brothers Greg Short (wife Carla) of Morgantown, WV, and Luke Short (wife Leah). She was deeply loved by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
To honor Dorinda's wishes, she will be cremated. The Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home in Terra Alta, WV, will provide compassionate, professional service and care to Dorinda and her family.
No Celebration of Life service is planned at this time, but her family invites all who knew and loved her to honor Dorinda by living with grace, listening with intention, and loving without condition — just as she did.
God blessed the Preston County, WV mountains with the most beautiful of souls in Dorinda. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.
